Description
The approximately thousand-year-old Kyburg is the most significant feudal castle in eastern Switzerland. In the 13th century, one of the most powerful noble families between the Alps and the Rhine lived here. The Kyburg counts died out, and the castle came into the possession of the city-state of Zurich in 1452, which sent its bailiffs to the castle. At the end of the Old Swiss Confederacy around 1798, the castle was overrun by the French Revolution. The people plundered and devastated the castle. Around 1917, the canton of Zurich acquired the castle and renovated it. Today, a museum is located within the well-preserved walls.
After visiting the castle, the path leads back via First, Agasul to Rumlikon and from there over Pfäffikon back to Hittnau.
