Description
The 5th stage of the Glacier Bike Tour begins flat through a picturesque forest along the Vorderrhein and railway tracks. The views become ever more spectacular, and from the Zault viewpoint the full grandeur of the Rhine Gorge finally opens up.
Before the entrance to the Safien Valley, you cross the old Versamertobel bridge. From Valendas, it continuously climbs from 800 m to 1,600 m uphill!
Finally, the view opens up into the Val Lumnezia, the largest side valley of the Surselva. After the farm settlement Ober Dutjen, it goes downhill via Riein and Sevgein to Ilanz.
Ilanz is the first town on the Rhine and is considered the "gateway to the Rhine Gorge." It lies in a wide, fertile basin that was once the bottom of the lake dammed by the landslide. You can take a lovely stroll through the pretty old town, which is currently blooming freshly. Among the sights are the Obertor, Casa Gronda and Casa Carniec, which houses the ethnological Museum Regiunal Surselva.
