Description
The stately church, first mentioned in 1498, is already visible. The path leads us towards Homberg. However, after Talhof, we turn left towards Hüsliriet. This swamp area is dammed in winter and freezes into an ice field the size of almost ten football fields at subzero temperatures. After about half a kilometer, the path makes a sharp right turn in the district of 'Wihalden' and after about 100 m, we cross the underpass that runs beneath the track of the Uerikon–Bauma railway (UeBB). Today, the track is used as an industrial siding up to the Wolfhausen industry. After about 200 m, we reach the main road Rüti–Hombrechtikon, which we do not cross yet but instead sharply turn right to ascend into the hamlet of Widenswil. To the right, oil tanks can be seen, which serve to hold emergency heating oil reserves. The path continues over the Grund valley into the circular route around the Egelsee, a moor lake formed during the retreat of the glaciers. In summer, it invites you to swim and is equipped with a playground, fitness park, and catering facilities. We walk back a little. At the group of houses 'Wihalden', we keep right and after about 10 minutes, we reach the Ritterhaus Bubikon, first mentioned in 1192. Founded by the Knights Hospitaller, the Ritterhaus Bubikon later became a refuge for the Knights of Malta. Thanks to thorough renovation, it is now the best-preserved house of the Knights of Malta. Now it is about 400 m to Bubikon train station.
