Description
Landskron castle overlooks the Leimental from its 340m height. It was classified as a historic monument in 1923. Its condition deteriorated over time. Since 1983 a Franco-Swiss association has been working to preserve, restore, and enhance the building. The castle, a witness to history, is today a symbol of the valley, accessible on both sides of the border to visitors. They can take the many paths traced on these first Jura foothills.
You will also find the Mariastein abbey where crowds of pilgrims come to pray every year. The pilgrimage church fascinates visitors not only because of its flamboyant Gothic architecture but also because of the idyllic surrounding landscape. The beginning of Mariastein's history is marked by a legend. A boy who fell from the cliff miraculously survived thanks to the intervention of Mary. Today, Mariastein is the second largest pilgrimage site in Switzerland after Einsiedeln. Going there on an excursion is an opportunity to visit a religious building while enjoying a pleasant walk.
