Description
The old Konstanz road stands for the eventful relationship between the two cities of St. Gallen and Konstanz. During the council from 1414 to 1418, traffic between the cities increased significantly. The cloth makers from Konstanz had production done in the low-cost region of St. Gallen, and the local industry supplied the booming Konstanz.
The route starts in the monastery district of St. Gallen, uses a busy main road to Wittenbach, and then gradually enters a green landscape, the hill chain between Lake Constance and the Sitter ravine. Past the white Dottenwil castle, past the shaggy Highland cattle of Ruggisberg to Hagenwil Castle, a well-preserved moated castle with a drawbridge. Amriswil only became larger than the surrounding hamlets after the opening of the Thurtal railway line.
The hinterland belongs to individualists who find relaxation among orchards, meadows, and wooded areas. In «Mostindien» apple and pear trees dominate the landscape; in Altnau, an educational trail explains fruit cultivation in Thurgau. The view of Lake Constance is phenomenal; the route approaches Kreuzlingen, and after an invisible border, it reaches the German Lake Constance city of Konstanz.
