Description
From the parking area, the trail ascends towards Alpe Corno (2205 m), crossing open and panoramic alpine terrain. In just over an hour, hikers reach the Corno Gries Hut (2336 m), an inviting place for a break and an overnight stay. Continuing onwards, the path leads to two picturesque alpine lakes at 2477 m and 2485 m, set in a particularly scenic natural environment.
From the lakes, it is possible to make a short ascent to the Mändeli (2499 m), followed by a descent towards the Nufenen Pass Road (2303 m). Crossing the Nufenen Pass (2440 m), the route returns to Alpe di Cruina. Those who prefer not to continue on foot once they reach the pass road can take the post bus, which stops along the road.
The total ascent is approximately 1,070 m, due to the numerous ups and downs along the route. Although the itinerary does not involve any particular technical difficulties, it is long and physically demanding and is therefore recommended for well-trained hikers with standard mountain equipment.
The tour also offers several interesting variants. Along the way, a short detour leads to the Gries Pass (2479 m), offering magnificent views over the Val Formazza. From there, it is possible to descend to Lake Morasco (1815 m) and then ascend again to the San Giacomo Pass (2313 m), returning to the Corno Gries Hut. Alternatively, from the hut one can ascend directly to the San Giacomo Pass via the Alpe San Giacomo di Maniò, where the small chapel of the same name is located.
