Description

Following the tumbling Schächenbach stream, you encounter scattered settlements typical of the Schächen valley. The first opportunity for a break is in one of the welcoming guesthouses of Unterschächen. On entering the Brunni valley, you are met with a wonderful view of the Gross Ruchen, the largest limestone crag in Europe. You follow the unpaved road through picturesque coniferous forests via Rüti to Alp Brunni. The route now climbs gently via Nider Lammerbach, past the Brunni Chapel to Trogenalp. The rustic restaurant there serves great-tasting alp cheese and a real Schächental coffee as you admire the idyllic views. The trip back follows the old road along the Hinterschächen. Passing through species-rich meadows and colourful woodland, you reach Lauwi and its wild animal sculptures hewn out of wood. Passing the Bad Chapel, nestled between the steep rock flanks of the Brunni valley, you arrive at Unterschächen. You then take the main Klausen road back to Altdorf.
