Description

Although the Romans already made extensive use of the pass routes over the Splügen and San Bernardino, the Rheinwald was only sparsely populated by Romans until the High Middle Ages. The Walser settled here in the 13th century. Their language and culture still characterize the valley today, where there was once heavy mule traffic towards the Splügen Pass or the San Bernardino Pass.

The circular tour starts in the mule village of Splügen at the foot of the Splügen Pass, a typical pass village with tanned Walser houses and proud palazzi.

On the left bank of the Hinterrhein, we ride past the ruins of Splügen Castle, the only one in the valley, to Sufers, where we cross the dam wall. The route leads along the lakeshore through the Göriwald forest back to Splügen.

We stay on the right bank of the river and continue upstream from Splügen over the Tamboboden to Nufenen. Once we arrive in Nufenen, we cross the Hinterrhein and take a leisurely ride on the left bank of the river via Medels back to Splügen.

Optionally, the round trip can be extended as far as the village of Hinterrhein and only change to the left bank of the river in Hinterrhein.
