Description
The Domleschg Castle Route is signposted as official cycle route no. 502 and can be ridden following this number throughout. It provides clear orientation along the entire route and leads through one of the most castle-rich landscapes in the Viamala region.
Impressive castles, ruins and palaces are lined up along the route, towering high above the valley and dominating the landscape. These include the ruins of Alt Süns near Paspels and Schauenstein Castle in Fürstenau, which is located directly on the route. Even if individual buildings are not open to the public, they serve as striking landmarks and bear witness to the historical importance of the Domleschg as an important transit route between north and south.
The route leads through varied cultural landscapes with orchards, meadows, dry stone walls and traditional village centers. Time and again, there are sweeping views across the valley and of the surrounding mountains, including the Heinzenberg range and the Beverin massif.
The route combines asphalted sections with well-maintained natural paths and offers a pleasant cycling experience with gentle climbs and flatter passages. Thanks to its easy accessibility by public transport, the route can be experienced flexibly as a full-day tour or in individual stages.
