Bündner Herrschaft
The small region of great wines
The Bündner Herrschaft is considered the warmest wine region in German-speaking Switzerland. The region is a paradise for wine tasting and excursions. Discover four wine villages on an enjoyable hike or an e-bike tour.
It's twice the fun: first hike and then enjoy a glass of wine with a view of the vines on which the grapes have ripened. You can do this and more in the sun-drenched Bündner Herrschaft region. If you want to discover the four wine villages, start your hike at Landquart railroad station. From the bottom of the valley, you can already see the first wine village, Malans, on the hill. In Malans, the signposts point to Jenins, the second wine village. The path there follows the pretty edge of a beech forest. If you prefer to walk through the vines, you can do this too, with beautiful views over the Rhine Valley. In Jenins, it is worth taking a break and stopping for refreshments at the “Alter Torkel” - the sweeping views over the vineyards and the Rhine Valley are magnificent. At the church, follow the signposts towards Rofels, where new, sweeping views of the Rhine Valley plain open up again above the vineyards. Continue straight on through the forest to Unterrofels and on to the Heidi village. Here you will find the original Heidi house from Johanna Spyri's story, complete with souvenir store. Follow the Heidi trail towards the Heidi fountain and Fläsch. Along the way, benches under the trees invite you to linger in a magical grove of old oak trees. The trail continues towards Maienfeld, the third village in the Bündner Herrschaft - you can visit it on the way back to Landquart between two PostBus services. Walk past the Heidi fountain in the direction of Fläsch. Fläsch is the fourth village in the Bündner Herrschaft and is particularly famous for its wines. Less well known is the fact that the largest colony of bats in Switzerland lives here: a mixed colony of over 1,000 greater and lesser mouse-eared bats lives in the church tower. Behind the church, the path leads down to the old Torkel of Fläsch and the bus stop on the road. Whether you stop here or at the Torkel in Malans or Jenins is up to you - the local wines will delight you both here and there.
Alter Torkel, Jenins From the terrace of the “Alter Torkel” you have a fantastic view of the Bündner Herrschaft. The Alter Torkel acts as the “House of Graubünden Wine”. The crus of around 70 winegrowers from the Bündner Herrschaft region can be sampled here. But after the wine, it's also about the food. The cuisine is listed with 13 points in Gault-Millau. Be sure to book in advance.
