Quarry

Description

The former slate quarry above Engi was first mentioned in a document in 1965. In the 17th century, the Quarry was an important source of income for the region of Glarus and the village of Engi. Slate products were transported almost all over the world. However, the quarry has also been the subject of repeated gological and palaeontological work. Numerous famous researchers have studied petrified fish and birds. In 1961 the slate quarry was closed down for hygienic and economic reasons.
