Panorama from Chasseral

Description

From its 1606.2 metres above sea level, the Chasseral offers a sensational view of the Swiss Plateau and the Alps - from the Säntis to Mont Blanc - on the one hand, and the Jura, Vosges and Black Forest on the other. In summer and winter, it attracts large numbers of hikers all year round. The access road, on which the pass was tolled until 2007, is also very busy. In the mid-2000s, there were 40,000 vehicles per year; today there are three to four times that number. The Swisscom antenna on the Chasseral is a cardinal landmark for hundreds of thousands of people. This telecommunications totem pole was erected in 1975. The 120 m high antenna was inaugurated in 1983. It is still used today as a relay transmitter for radio and television broadcasts, for Rega and, in a more discreet and less well-known way, for the army.
