Museo etnografico della Valle di Muggio
Description
Aware of the rich historical, artistic, ethnographic and landscape heritage of the region between Lake Ceresio and Lake Lario, the Museo etnografico della Valle di Muggio (MEVM) first promoted its study and then performed numerous conservation and development projects. With its focus on the relationship with the local territory, it can be defined as a “museum in the territory”.
The MEVM operates on the belief that a museum should not be conceived as a place for collecting objects but should be closely linked to the territory in support of local identity. In this sense, one of the priority objectives of the ecomuseum concept is to involve local communities and the population as much as possible. The museum relies on a strong volunteer base for its activities, while the professional component is indispensable for conceptual and planning work and is the responsibility of the curators. The concrete heritage preservation interventions carried out by the MEVM have contributed to increasing the responsibility that we all have towards the territory. The landscape, with its natural, anthropic and emotional components, can be an excellent starting point for finding increasingly shared projects and interventions for the future. In this sense, the activities of the MEVM are perfectly in line with the new definition of museums adopted by ICOM in 2022.
