Jewish cultural trail Endingen-Lengnau

Description

Jews have lived in Endingen and Lengnau for 400 years. For decades, they were only allowed to live here. It was not until 1866 that they were given the freedom by the federal government to settle anywhere in Switzerland. In the decades that followed, most of them moved away, for example to Baden, Zurich or abroad. By 1850, the Jewish communities in Endingen had grown to 990 and in Lengnau to 525 people. This meant that Jewish residents made up 30 per cent of the total population in Lengnau and 50 per cent in Endingen. Their buildings still characterise the two villages, which are classified as sites of national importance, and nowhere else in Switzerland is there such a density of Jewish building culture. the Jewish Cultural Trail makes this cultural heritage accessible. Starting from the two synagogues, it includes architectural witnesses to Jewish culture in Endingen and Lengnau as well as the Jewish cemetery, which lies between the two villages.
