Treno Gottardo Booklet
Description
The Gotthard mountain route is spectacular: lakes, mountains and lots of engineering can be discovered from the train. But it's also worth getting off the train. A new travel guide from SOB and Transhelvetica provides tips. The Treno Gottardo overcomes a difference in altitude of 636 meters on the north side of the Gotthard mountain route. Among other things, the train winds its way through the three helical tunnels near Wassen before entering the 15-kilometre Gotthard summit tunnel at Göschenen. In Airolo, the Südostbahn Traverso reaches the highest point of its journey at 1141 meters above sea level before reaching the lowest point in Tenero at 197 meters above sea level in 77 minutes. Between all these key dates lie not only varied landscapes, but also plenty of stories. On 164 pages, a new travel guide from Südostbahn and Transhelvetica draws attention to these journeys of discovery. Every stop and every section of line between Arth-Goldau and Locarno is the setting for one of the 37 articles. Even though the mountain route is an invitation to explore historical issues - from the Federal Charter Museum in Schwyz to a Russian “general in a dead end” (Sumorov) - the booklet also offers insights into the here and now, such as the ultra-modern battery crane in Castione.
