The Museo Comunale d'Arte Moderna in Ascona and the Museo Castello San Materno are open from April and throughout the year. The two museums exhibit works of contemporary art that were collected by private donors and are now open to the public.

Versatile art collection

This important art collection brings together more than 60 works by painters active in the German-speaking world who were among the art elite in the period from the end of the 19th century to the years after the First World War. Thus we find here the Impressionists Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth and the artists of the Worpswede School (Fritz Overbeck, Hans am Ende, Otto Modersohn and Paula Modersohn-Becker) of this last bastion of 19th century German Romanticism, which was then to mark the transition from human-social realism to Impressionism and finally to Expressionism. This movement is represented in the collection by several artists from the Brücke (Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Hermann Max Pechstein, Emil Nolde) and the Blaue Reiter (Alexej Jawlensky, August Macke), the two artists' associations that spread expressionist concepts in German-speaking countries: the vitalistic and socially oriented expressionism in Dresden and Berlin and the lyrical and visionary expressionism in Munich.
