An open space for art without boundaries. The open art museum presents exhibitions that bridge the gap between Art Brut, naïve art, and contemporary art. A special focus is placed on engaging children and young people. The museum boasts a collection of over 8,000 works by more than 180 artists and stands for the existential significance of artistic creation—both for the individual and for society as a whole. It brings people together through art and sees itself as an open space for art without boundaries, with a focus on Outsider Art. The changing exhibitions at the open art museum showcase works that fascinate through their versatility, their unusual content, and their inventiveness. At the same time, they tell stories of lived experience—art full of stories. We aim to show that art emerges everywhere—often from everyday life, using simple means and materials. It opens up surprising perspectives and invites us to rediscover both the familiar and the unfamiliar.

Almost all artists working in Art Brut, Outsider Art, and Naïve Art are self-taught. With surprising confidence, they put their ideas, feelings, and longings down on paper and shape and build worlds from a wide variety of materials. This is a nonconformist and individual art form, full of life and stories, that captivates viewers with its versatility, extraordinary content, and inventiveness.

Visit us and experience an open space for art without boundaries. On view in the fall of 2026 are the exhibitions Adelheid Duvanel, Komm Glüückck, and Ficht Tanner – Drawn Life. More about the exhibitions:

Adelheid Duvanel (through October 18)

The open art museum is dedicating a comprehensive exhibition of drawings and paintings to the Basel-based writer and artist Adelheid Duvanel (1936–1996). While her delicate, laconic textual miniatures have long been counted among the most distinctive voices in Swiss literature, her visual art has received little recognition to this day.

Komm Glüückck (through October 18)

With this exhibition, the open art museum presents works from its collection in which the interplay between word and image takes center stage. The exhibition brings together thoughts, greetings, poems, and stories, typographic works and picture stories, art postcards, as well as conceptual explorations of language and vocabulary. Ficht Tanner – A Life in Drawings (starting November 15)

The exhibition traces the life of the Trogen-based artist through his drawings, from his early years through his life and work with Esther Marcoux and Therese Hächler, to his time with Rudolf Mumprecht. Every stroke and every motif in Ficht Tanner’s work reflects an experience. Musical performances complement the exhibition.
