Description
From the Villeret station, descend into the village, cross the main road and take the paved lane to the rest area at the forest edge. On a wide forest road, the ascent begins through the narrow forest gorge Combe Grède. Several times, the path, confined by steep rock walls, crosses the mostly dry stream bed over large boulders. The very steep gorge section is overcome via steps made of limestone and metal ladders anchored in the rock. The path is well secured but still requires careful walking. Soon the view opens to Montagne du Droit. Deep below lie the houses of Villeret. Passing a rest area, you reach the distinctive signpost at Pré aux Auges, where tall ridges and alpine flowers delight. However, another 300 meters of altitude gain to the Chasseral Hotel (20 min to the summit) still have to be mastered. The view is overwhelming. The descent is varied. At Pré aux Auges, you leave the ascent route and gently descend to La Corne, called Chaise à l’Evêque (= bishop's seat). This unique viewpoint offers a bird's-eye deep view. Beautiful mountain maples line the path to the Métairie des Plânes. Crossing open pastures, you pass the high terrace to the La Perrotte farm and then descend steeply through the forest to St-Imier.
