Pass crossings – a long-standing tradition The Gotthard massif – a key crossing on the ancient axis linking northern and southern Europe – is steeped in Swiss history. The alpine crossing over the Gotthard ranked amongst the most important trade routes and was, until early in the 19th century, negotiable only by simple mule path.
