Susten Pass

The route begins in Innertkirchen, where the Gadmer Valley and Haslital intersect. The first phase covers an elevation of 600 metres up to Gadmen, the ascent meanders along a more or less straight line through the Gadmer Valley. At the outskirts of Gadmen, the road winds its way up the mountain in long sweeping curves – the next 600 metres of elevation are climbed to the «Himmelrank» at 1800 metres above sea level.

Nomen est omen: The ascent is exhausting where the trail seems to stretch up to the sky, but the reward is a divine view. A brief stop offers a view of the kilometres travelled so far to Gadmen through the valley. There are about 4 kilometres and 400 metres of elevation left to reach the Susten Pass. Over the Bäregg, past Steinsee Lake and the Steingletscher alpine cheese dairy, awaits the pass summit at 2260 metres above sea level. It's all downhill from here: First around some long switchbacks to Sustenbrüggli, where the Sustenbrüggli Restaurant welcomes visitors to partake of sustenance before the final descent. From here the generally straight road runs gradually downhill for about 10 kilometres. Finally, the route winds downhill over two kilometres in sweeping curves until reaching the town Wassen, the tour’s final destination.
