Rhine Valley Alpine Trail

Description
The hiking trail mostly runs along scenic elevations below the Alvier group of mountains, high above the Rhine Valley. It offers a sweeping view of the valley plain to the mountains on the opposite side. The trail then winds through apple orchards, crossing the main wine-growing area of the canton of St.Gallen where the special grape varieties of Riesling and Sylvaner are grown. The hike through the protected upland moors of the Alvier region can be combined with a visit to one of the alpine cheese dairies along the way. If you’re a history buff, you might want to stay overnight in one of the many castles and fortresses along the route or to visit the Roman Trail near Wildhaus. The Rheintaler Höhenweg consists of 6 one-day stages. Of course, you can also tackle the 105 km long hike as an athletic challenge. But there is so much to discover along the way that it would be a shame to rush.
