Description

The ruins of Jörgenberg are located on the outermost rocky spur of an elongated ridge to the east of the municipality of Waltensburg. Alongside Kropfenstein, Grünenfels Castle and Vogelberg Castle, Jörgenberg was one of the original four castles in Waltensburg and was already inhabited in the Middle Bronze Age. Jörgenberg was first mentioned as a castellum in Bishop Tello's will in 765.

The hike begins in the center of Waltensburg village. For culture lovers, it is worth making a detour to Waltensburg church. The reformed church is a gem among churches. The wall paintings by an unknown master from around 1330 are particularly valuable in terms of art history. You hike on to the end of the village, where the path continues to Munt Sogn Gieri/Jörgenberg castle. The two stone pillars of a former gallows on the way to the castle ruins of Munt Sogn Gieri bear witness to this lively past. Alleged witches, sorcerers and other wrongdoers met their end here on the gallows.

The trail markings in the description of this tour are based on the 1:25000 hiking map for Brigels, Waltensburg, Andiast. The hiking map is available from the Brigels information office, the Volg Andiast and Waltensburg shops and the Hotel Postigliun in Andiast.
