Description
The road starts from the Toce Waterfall and the route features hairpin bends and gentle slopes, flanked by stone walls and arches from which you can take unique photos of the Riale plain and the peaks of Alta Formazza. After this first uphill section, the road continues on a plateau crossing the Alpe Toggia basin, arriving at the Maria Luisa Refuge and running along the Toggia Lake dam. The ascent increases to reach San Giacomo Pass, where since 1885 there was a small shelter that housed telegraph operators and from which opens a beautiful view of the Swiss Val Bedretto. Here in the 1930s new fortifications were built that became the heart of the defensive system of the namesake pass: the artillery fort "Grandinagia" and the armored fort "San Giacomo".
