Monte Generoso MTB itinerary

The route begins at the Capolago railway station, the starting point for the characteristic rack railway, which has been carrying travellers to the summit of Monte Generoso for over 130 years (check the timetable on the official website), and descends to the intermediate stop at Bellavista, located at 1,223 m a.s.l., where you will find the renovated Buffet Bellavista, a cosy restaurant nestling in the woods.

Continue from here along the forest road that slopes down towards Cascina d’Armirone, passing by the Momò Bellavista and the Osteria con alloggio La Peonia. The itinerary proceeds on a surfaced road following the official signs in the direction of Alpe di Caviano, past the oratory of Cascina d’Armirone and skirting a section of the Monte Generoso Forest Reserve, which opened in 2024.

The surfaced road gradually turns into a dirt road, which then leads to an old mule track. It takes about 25 minutes to reach the Alpe di Caviano (967 m a.s.l.), an oasis of tranquillity in nature and the perfect place to stop for a traditional meal or to spend a night in the cosy, modern facility (check the opening hours on the official website). From here, the panorama is vast and spectacular, stretching as far as the Alps.

Returning to the old mule track, head down to the village of Obino. From here, follow the official white signs “Itinerario tra i vigneti numero 1” (Itinerary among vineyards number 1) in the direction of Castel San Pietro until you reach the town hall in the historic heart of the village.

Lastly, turn left onto a surfaced road and continue in the direction of Corteglia. From the village centre, follow the official Route 350 signs in the direction of Capolago, to get back to the starting point at the railway station.
