Description

From here, a beautiful flat trail supported by walls and military walkways leads to the San Jorio Pass (2,011 m). This pass plays an important role in the history of the valley because, at the beginning of the last century, numerous inhabitants smuggled contraband over the San Jorio from Carena or Gesero. Rice, pasta, cured meats, fabrics, and carpets were imported and at the same time cigarettes, salt and coffee were exported. Smuggling continued until after the war.

Along the route are trenches and bunkers dating back to WWI, illustrated by the Fortificazioni Ticinesi (forti.ch) information panels.

From the famous pass that divides Switzerland and Italy, return to Carena via the Alpe di Giumello (1,594 m) where excellent D.O.P. alpine cheese is produced during the summer.

There are several panoramic viewpoints along the way, including a particularly fascinating one above Alpe Giumello. From here enjoy a breathtaking view of the Magadino Plain extending as far as Lake Maggiore, as well as the surrounding mountains. This vantage point is ideal for admiring the scenery and taking memorable photos.
