Description
The Justistal, the entrance to which is clearly marked by the distinctive Niederhorn, is a snow-sure winter paradise. Its name comes from Justus, a monk who once spread the gospel in the Lake Thun area together with his fellow monk and companion Beatus. The route starts at Grön with a gentle descent alongside the Grönbach stream, which flows into Lake Thun in Merligen. The perfectly prepared cross-country skiing trail leads at between 1200 and 1400 m.a.s.l through the unsurpassed landscape of Justistal, nestled between the Sigriswil Rothorn, Niederhorn and Gemmenalphorn and Sichel. This is a trail to fill the heart of any cross-country skier with delight. The route continues past the Spycherberg, which sets the stage every autumn for the legendary "Chästeilet", in which the cheese from a summer’s alp grazing is divided between the farmers according to their cattle’s milk yield. From here, the impressive, maybe somewhat mystical valley floor of the Justistal opens up with a view of the trail’s end, the Hindersberg alp hut, and, right at the rear of the valley, the Sichel, a crescent-shaped pass crossing to the Zulgtal valley. The return journey of this challenging and remote trail leads by the same route back to the starting point.
