Description
The hike begins in the village of Grellingen (BL), which is easily accessible by public transport from Basel SBB.
A wild, narrow and challenging path leads from here through the Chastelbach valley. After the ascent past the Chastelbach waterfall, deep karst caves await us in the gorge of the Kaltbrunnen Valley (Swiss German: Chaltbrunnen Valley). Here, a karst nature trail provides exciting insights into geological and archaeological features: prehistoric finds, spring areas and the Ibach cave tell of a time around 40,000 years ago when Neanderthals lived here.
At Chessiloch, a rock face with over 100 painted military coats of arms commemorates the mobilization of 1914. During the First World War, two railroad bridges were guarded there; soldiers lived in the small cave on the wall for a time.
The ViaSurprise leads along the Birs to Zwingen Castle - the core of the medieval town foundation in Laufental.
