You need to flex your muscles a bit at the beginning of the tour but once you’re warmed up, you can enjoy the ride through the rolling hills of Eggerstanden. But make sure to look over your shoulder at least once, otherwise you’ll miss the imposing view of the entire Alpstein Massif. Now you can immerse yourself into the hilly landscape. The steady climb up through the Chräzeren Woods and on to the Hoher Hirschberg summit is well and truly rewarded with a superb view over the Alpstein. The long descent to the Rhine Valley, which lies around 550 metres below, is almost effortless, taking you through the vineyards to the historic Altstätten market town which has a lot of cultural and traditional surprises in store. And getting back to Appenzell is a breeze with the Appenzell mountain railways.
