Description

The Schamserberg lies on Piz Beverin's south-eastern flank. The winter hiking trail begins outside Mathon, leading through the wood, past the tepee and on to the sleepy Nutschias alm. Cross the open expanse above the tree line to the snow-covered Libi-See, the highest point on the trail. This beautiful lake set amid the mountains is an ideal spot for a rest in the sun, with a fantastic view of Muttner Horn, Piz Curvér, Piz la Tschera and Surettahorn. Proceed past the idyllic alm huts at Dros and the tepee through the wood back to the sleepy mountain village of Mathon.

While German is now virtually the only language in the valley, Romansh is the dominant tongue in the hamlets of Muntogna da Schons (Schamserberg). It is the same in Mathon, birthplace of famous Romansh songwriter Tumasch Dolf (1889–1963). If you have time to stroll through the village before or after your hike, don't miss the two churches. St. Antoniuskirche, saved from dereliction, was built in around 1200. The second, newer church on the Schamserberg has an impressive organ painted with flower motifs. Mathon is also known as «vischnaunca dils buons zenns» (the village of good bells). If the wind and weather conditions are right, the sound of Mathon church bell, cast in 1528, can be heard throughout Val Schons.
