Description

The Chestnut Path is a thematic path about 15 km long in the high region of the area, known as Alto Malcantone. Apart from evidencing the woodlands, the cultivations and the chestnut trees, the path has 7 marked educational points and offers information regarding the process of working chestnut wood and its derivatives.

Immersed in a natural amphiteatre surrounded by the Gradiccioli Peaks, the view towards the south is a typical panorama of the Alto Malcantone characterized by a mosaic of villages, such as Mugena, Vezio and Fescoggia, that are harmoniously integrated between woods and open fields. For educational purposes, between Mugena and Vezio there is an edifice called a "metato", which is otherwise known as a "grà".

This stone-built building is where the chestnuts are dried by exposing them on grates to moderate heat and smoke. By drying the chestnuts, the fruit can be conserved for several months.
