Description
The Finsteraarhorn in the heart of the Bernese Alps is a bit off the beaten path. Regardless of which starting point you choose, the approach to the hut alone is a genuine day tour. Thus, you will rarely want to climb the Finsteraarhorn as a solitary summit with skis but always include it in a multi-day ski circuit through the Bernese Oberland. The most common hut approaches to the Finsteraarhorn hut start high up at the Jungfrau Railway's mountain station at Jungfraujoch: usually, you ski down the Jungfrau glacier to the Konkordiaplatz and cross over the Grünhorn notch heading east onto the Fiescher glacier, which you cross to the ski depot under the hut. Via a short ladder and a narrow path, you climb almost 50 vertical meters up to the hut. A total of 670 vertical meters ascent and 1180 vertical meters descent, 3 – 4 hours. The steep southwest summit ascent with a long block ridge at the end requires stable spring snow conditions.
