Description
The itinerary starts in the Sottopenz near the Chiasso SBB railway station. Following the official signs, the ascent towards Pedrinate begins. Continue always following the official signposts towards Seseglio (Via punto geografico SUD). You pass the "Sosta dal Fungiatt" where you can stop for a picnic.
From here, continuing for a few metres, you can reach the Belvedere Terrace overlooking the Basso Mendrisiotto. Returning to the official you reach the most southerly point in Switzerland, located in the Parco del Penz. Along the Swiss-Italian border along the “Sentiero delle Guardie” you reach the gentle hills of vineyards.
After about a 10-minute walk, you reach the Customs House at Pedrinate. A steep forest path leads to the agricultural countryside of Seseglio, where you follow the official signpost in the direction of Novazzano. Along the Faloppia River in the direction of Novazzano you reach the entrance to the Parco della Valle della Motta. Following an easy path along the Roncaglia stream, you arrive at the Mulino del Daniello.
In direction of Mendrisio, thanks to a practical subway you will cross the motorway and the railway and continue the cantonal road to the Colle degli Ulivi. Continuing an old mule track you will reach Corteglia. Having passed the pretty village we continue a secondary asphalted road.
We pass by the Villa Turconi farm in Loverciano (Castel San Pietro) and continue in the direction of the Parco delle Gole della Breggia. You enter the Park, a geopark of exceptional interest, especially for the geological and paleontological heritage it preserves. Descending along the signposted path, you will reach the Punt da Canaa, the “Meadow of the Witches” and the Farügin Bridge (or Punt dal Diavul) further on. At the end of the descent, attention inevitably falls on the imposing structure of the former Saceba cement factory.
Continuing along the path along the river, it is worth making a small diversion to the Ghitello Mill. Our route continues with official signposting towards Balerna.
