Description
The monastery complex, situated on a hill near Brunnen, is home to the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross. They call themselves the "Ingenbohl Sisters" and are part of an international congregation of Catholic nuns – a community in faith, life, and work.
It was founded in 1856 by Capuchin Father Theodosius Florentini (1808–1865) and Sister Maria Theresia Scherer (1825–1888). The religious community arose as an important response to the growing need in the 19th century. Today, around 2,600 sisters in 18 different countries live in the congregation and respond to the diverse needs of our time with openness and energy.
The monastery path comprises nine stations and invites you to take an exciting walk on the monastery hill. Along the way, visitors experience the history of Ingenbohl Monastery: Who was Capuchin Father Theodosius Florentini (1808–1865), the founder of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross? They also learn a great deal about the work of the co-founder and first Superior General, Mother Maria Theresia Scherer (1825–1888), who assumed responsibility for the newly founded order at a young age.
The monastery path leads you to one of the most beautiful vantage points in the municipality of Ingenbohl. From the monastery hill, you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view: On one side stretches the Schwyz valley, above which the Little and Great Mythen mountains tower. On the other side, you will be enchanted by the view across Lake Lucerne up to Seelisberg and the Uri Alps.
Information about the monastery path can also be accessed digitally. Simply scan the QR codes at the individual stations and history comes to life. You can find the link to the videos here.
The Monastery Trail brochure (in German) contains detailed descriptions of the individual stations.
