Description

The 5th section of the Glacier Bike Tour begins flat through a picturesque forest along the Vorderrhein and the railway tracks. The views become increasingly impressive and from the Zault vantage point, the full grandeur of the Rhine Gorge finally reveals itself.

Before entering the Safiental valley, the route crosses the old Versamertobel bridge. From Valendas, the route climbs steadily from 800 metres to 1,600 metres!

Finally, the view opens up into Val Lumnezia, the largest side valley of the Surselva. After the farming settlement of Ober Dutjen, the route descends via Riein and Sevgein to Ilanz.

Ilanz is the first town on the Rhine and is known as the "gateway to the Rhine Gorge". It lies in a wide, fertile hollow that was once the bottom of the lake dammed by the landslide. You can take a lovely stroll through the pretty old town centre, which is just beginning to blossom. Sights include the Obertor, Casa Gronda and Casa Carniec, which is home to the Regiunal Surselva Folklore Museum.
