Description

The trail starts flat through the village past the imposing monastery and continues towards the Fürenalp cable car. The valley becomes narrower and the surface changes to gravel after about 1.5 km. The trail continues steadily uphill past the Herrenrüti and the Alpenrösli restaurant to the Stäfeli alpine cheese dairy/mountain inn. At Alp Stäfeli, the gravel road leads away to the right and crosses the Stierenbach stream. From there the trail goes up and down on the right side of the valley via the forest road, in front of the flanks of the Spannörter, past the Stäuber waterfall. The trail now continues to the right towards Blackenalp. At Blackenalp there is time to take a break with a magnificent view of the mountains - the Spannörter and the Surrenenpass ahead - and to recharge your batteries for the last ascent to the Surenenpass at the Alpbeizli Blackenalp. Strengthened, the route continues steadily upwards, sometimes on the bike, sometimes alongside the bike, but always with the anticipation that it's not that far to the top of the pass. The view of the Urner Alps also makes you forget all your exertions. A very challenging single trail awaits you from the highest point of the tour to Alp Waldnacht. At the lake before Alp Waldnacht, turn right onto another single trail. From Zieriberg, the road and single trail alternate until you reach the valley floor.

There are now various options for the way back to Engelberg. If you want to stay in the saddle a little longer, you can return to Engelberg via Seelisberg/Emmetten/Dallenwil. The more leisurely options are either to set off from Erstfeld by train or from Flüelen by boat back towards Engelberg.
