Walensee - Where almond trees blossom
Discover three popular excursions to the Riviera of Eastern Switzerland
Is this a Nordic fjord or are we on the Riviera? Both – the southern shore of Lake Walen entices with mild temperatures and unique views.
3 tips for a trip to Lake Walen
The fjord-like Lake Walen, under the towering Churfirsten peaks, is a unique excursion destination. The paths along the sun-drenched shores are perfect for a stroll. In addition to the idyllic village of Quinten, there is a large waterfall to marvel at and Lake Walen invites you to take a leisurely boat trip.
How to get there: take the IR Aare Linth to Walenstadt.
1. Stroll from Walenstadt to Quinten
The classic route along Lake Walen is certainly the path from Walenstadt to Quinten. The picturesque village is only accessible on foot or by boat, which makes hiking a special treat. Protected by the almost vertical mountains and due to its southern exposure, an exceptionally mild climate prevails. The place is therefore rightly called the Riviera of Eastern Switzerland. Grapes, figs, kiwis and other tropical fruits grow in Quinten. The local wines are also well worth a try, for example, the local Seyval Blanc. From Quinten, you can return to Walenstadt by boat – with beautiful views of the lake and mountains.
2. Hike to the largest waterfall
Sporty hikers can continue westwards after refreshments and a break in Quinten am Walensee. A true natural wonder awaits you here. After a good hour's hike along the shore, the spectacular Seerenbach Falls thunder down three levels over the vertical rock walls. At 600 metres high, they are among the largest waterfalls in Europe. The sight is particularly impressive in spring after the snow melts or after heavy rainfall due to the large amounts of water. The steep ascent to the viewing platform is worth it: from there, the view falls directly on the vertical rock face and on the masses of water rushing down to the valley. Those who are not quite so sporty have a good view of all three stages of the waterfall at the chapel in the hamlet of Betlis, which lies further west.
3. Enjoy a boat trip on Lake Walen
Those who no longer want to hike and those who have enjoyed the beautiful view for too long at the Paradiesli restaurant or at Strahlegg Castle can board a ship of the Walensee Shipping Company at the Betlis landing stage and end the hiking day with a trip across the lake to Walenstadt or to nearby Weesen.
