Gotthard Snowcastle
Perfect snow conditions for winter sports enthusiasts
The Gotthard in the center of the Alps is a myth and full of exciting stories. Located at a weather divide, the region is snow-sure. There is so much to experience around the Gotthard in winter.
Snowy winters on the Gotthard Winters on the Gotthard often begin in the last days of October and the last remaining patches of snow don't melt until June. Due to its geographical location, the region is considered to be extremely snow-sure. It is therefore not surprising that the snow cover on the Gotthard has been measured for centuries. The peak value of the current measurements is 670 centimetres of snow. The snow measurements and records show - unsurprisingly - that there used to be even more snow on the Gotthard. Nevertheless, the walls of snow on the Gotthard Pass road are still impressive today when the first cyclists ride on it again after the snow has been cleared.
Skiing fun guaranteed Winter sports fans look forward to the early start of the winter season in the Gotthard region in late fall. The Gemsstock area on the northern slope is the first Andermatt ski area to open its pistes to the Gurschen middle station, usually as early as October. On the opposite side of the valley is the largest ski area in the whole of Central Switzerland. It is also one of the most attractive in Switzerland. The SkiArena Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis combines three ski areas, two languages, two cultures and two cantons and reaches an altitude of 2961 meters above sea level. Here on the sunny side, the season starts a little later at the beginning of December and ends in mid-April.
