Leventina
Impressive natural beauty
The Leventina valley extends along the Ticino river from the southern entrance of the Gotthard tunnel near Airolo to the town of Biasca. Many people know the Leventina and the region around Bellinzona as a transit route from north to south. However, the valley also has a lot of scenic beauty to offer.
The Piumogna waterfall in Faido, for example, is a wonderful natural spectacle. This attraction in Faido is over 40 metres high and can be reached quickly on foot from the train station. There is a picnic area with tables for those who want to linger, and a playground for children. The Leventina also has a number of other attractions. The most famous hike is the Strada Alta, a panoramic mountain trail that leads from Airolo to Biasca. The Leventina, with the Ritom region and Lake Ritom, is a magnificent natural place of power. Nature lovers can reach the Ritom recreation area from Piotta by taking the little red train to the Piora mountain station. With a maximum incline of 87.8%, this funicular railway is one of the steepest in the world. Adventurous souls who enjoy mountain biking in summer can expect breathtaking scenery and majestic mountain ridges in the Bedretto Valley and in Airolo. Winter sports enthusiasts will find a unique panorama in the Bedretto Valley during the winter season. Whether skiing, ski touring, winter hiking or snowshoe tours – there is something for everyone here.
