Gelateria di Berna
"We learned the trade in the best gelaterias in Verona"
Ice cream is a celebration of joie de vivre and a symbol of summer. For many people, the enjoyment of ice cream is associated with unforgettable memories.
What could be better than a refreshing ice cream on a hot summer's day? The cooling treat is an uncomplicated pleasure that puts you in a good mood and helps you to relax and enjoy the moment. What is now a summer dream for many was once reserved for the wealthy, as ice cream usually had to be brought from far away in the mountains and was an expensive luxury item. Fortunately for us modern-day sweet tooths, new technologies have been developed over the course of time that make ice cream a cold refreshment for everyone. One of the birthplaces of ice cream is Italy. Perhaps this is the reason why Italian gelato is so popular worldwide.
"Ice cream makes you happy. It evokes positive memories and rewards the brain with dopamine."
Italian gelato, this special delicacy, is characterized by a high milk content and a low fat content and is produced slowly and gently so that it retains its full flavour and creamy consistency. Its production requires a great deal of craftsmanship and knowledge. It is often sold in artisan ice cream parlors that are known for their creativity and quality. The proactive founders of Gelateria di Berna are a good example. Their passion for gelati has the same reason why ice cream makes many people happy - childhood memories. Hansmartin Amrein, who founded Gelateria di Berna with his brothers Michael and David and his wife Susanna Moor, smiles: "It was camping vacations in Italy that left a lasting impression on our childhood. Somewhere between Livorno and Follonica. A small place by the sea. The same thing year after year. On the piazza, the boys do their laps on their Vespas. Older men grumble loudly about Christian Democrats or Communists. Women, dressed smartly or in black, stand around the fountain with their shopping. And right in the middle: the gelateria! The memory of the happiness of standing in front of this display case and being able to choose gelati for a thousand lire was what drove us," says Hansmartin Amrein.
“A Schleck Zuppa-Inglese gelato and you'll instantly feel like you're in Piazza Maggiore in Bologna.”
"We learned the trade in the best gelaterias in Verona. We started out in a disused cheese dairy at the foot of the Belpberg in a gelateria that we largely renovated ourselves. And lo and behold, the meeting zone in front of it almost turned into a piazza. Three years later, we also appeared in the Marzili. Where Bern celebrates the summer. And later also in other places in Bern. And because David had been living in Zurich for some time and finally wanted to have a gelateria within walking distance with his boys, we converted an old car garage on Brupbacherplatz into a gelato laboratory in 2017. Today, we have several locations in Zurich and one in Kleinbasel. We are seekers and have retained a childlike curiosity," says Amrein. In fact, the Bernese gelato makers are always exploring new sensory boundaries and sometimes present little crazes in their display cases. This early summer, for example, an asparagus sorbetto on barley malt danced out of line. “We want to surprise our guests with every taste and invite them on a (train) journey,” smiles Hansmartin Amrein.
