Beer culture, culinary delights and encounters

It is well known that the people of St. Gallen do not wear their hearts on their sleeves. And are therefore often underestimated. Wrongly so, the eastern Swiss metropolis offers many hospitable, lovable places of enjoyment. Almost to be expected and yet a surprise. We are greeted in the St. Gallen station concourse by the best-known delicacy in Eastern Switzerland: the St. Gallen bratwurst - without mustard. However, it does not impose itself on us in the city and we will encounter it again. Also in the St. Gallen first-storey pubs. These have proud names such as “Zum Goldenen Schäfli”, “Wirtschaft zur alten Post” or “Schwarzer Adler”. The ascent to these typical St. Gallen pubs is reminiscent of a characteristic trait of the city's inhabitants: just as you climb step by step to the second floor to then enjoy yourself, the people of St. Gallen sometimes need a little time to step out of their reserve. And then they often surprise you with their warmth. St. Gallen has grown up with the international textile trade. The embroidery boom is long gone, but internationality and diversity remain. The city is home to restaurants and pubs that could be found in Berlin, Copenhagen or Paris. If you want to gain a deeper insight into the history and local culture, you can combine this with indulgence and book a culinary city stroll with St. Gallen-Lake Constance Tourism, which includes three courses in three restaurants. There are plenty of places in the city for an enjoyable stopover. Be it for something tasty to fill your stomach or simply for a beer. After all, the famous oldest building plan in Europe - which can be seen in the exhibition room of the Abbey District - shows two breweries in the monastery grounds. In this context, it is not surprising that St. Gallen is also home to the oldest brewery in Switzerland.

How to get there: Take the Voralpen-Express or the Alpenrhein-Express to St. Gallen.
