Tub tomb - Masso avello
Description
The grave is also known as a "soldier's grave", "stone grave" or "Masso Avello" in Italian. It is carved with great precision into a large flat block of granite and lies on the southern bank of the Meira, which flows through the Bergell valley. The tub is 1.92 meters long, 82 centimetres wide and 58 centimetres deep. A sill was carved at the western end so that the deceased was facing east. To prevent the lid from slipping, a rectangular depression 14 centimetres wide was carved around the tub. According to local tradition, however, the lid is said to have fallen into the river and shattered there. The rainwater was drained away through a narrow channel.
The grave is located in the Palü district of the village of Stampa in Bergell.
