Schloss Hauptwil (Hauptwil Castle)

Description

History:In 1666, Hans Jacob Gonzenbach founded his linen manufacturing and trading company in Hauptwil, Thurgau, in order to escape the economic restrictions imposed by the city. In the years that followed, the small hamlet developed into a flourishing production site that combined all stages of production in a pioneering business model. With the end of the 18th century and the onset of the linen crisis, textile production in Hauptwil became less important. Cotton, which was more fashionable at the time, replaced woven fabric.

Architecture:Hauptwil Castle was built within a year in 1665. The building combines elements of a Gothic stone house with vernacular architecture, incorporating Baroque proportions and ornamental forms. The white façade is divided by horizontal bands of windows and has a gabled roof with a cross gable.

Current use:Hauptwil Castle fulfills a variety of functions today: It serves as a venue for weddings or corporate events and offers space for working or living.
