Sarner Baby Jesus
Description
The Sarner Baby Jesus is a 50-centimetre-high Gothic wooden figure from the 14th century. What is striking about this figure is that the baby Jesus has raised his right leg and placed the globe on it. With his left hand, he is pointing to his God-human heart.
According to an old tradition from 1634, this unusual position can be traced back to a nun who was unable to attend Christmas mass due to illness.
Depending on the liturgical time, the baby Jesus is dressed in different garments. They range from dresses made of pink moiré to white rep, linen and different-colored silks to dark red velvet decorated with precious metal pieces, which was part of a ceremonial dress of Queen Agnes of Hungary and was given to the nuns in 1364.
Prayer requests With the veneration of the Sarnen Infant Jesus in the convent church, the sisters have the task of a place of pilgrimage. As guardians of the picture of grace, they come into direct contact with the concerns of many people in need. Through the power of the Gospel, they can offer them help in life and faith. The sisters place letters and notes with worries and wishes from the faithful at the Infant Jesus and include the requests in their prayers.
Visiting information The Infant Jesus of Sarnen is located in the monastery church and is freely accessible during church opening hours. Reservations are not required.
