Description

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research centre for natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland. The various main areas of research at the PSI are brought to life on 13 themed islands. A researcher gives you an insight into his working environment and explains his work at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The exhibits on the individual themed islands illustrate a specific aspect of his work. You can discover the exhibition individually according to your own interests. Exclusive 3D films complement your visit: ‘Once in space and back’ shows the large-scale research facility, the SwissFEL X-ray laser. In the film, aliens from a distant galaxy land at PSI. They need SwissFEL to rid their planet of air pollution. Or travel ‘Around the world in 80 million years’ and find out more about the carbon cycle. On a ‘Journey into the heart of matter’ you will learn about the elementary particles after the Big Bang and accompany them through the accelerator facility at PSI.

How to get there: From the bus stop Villigen, PSI West in 5 minutes to the visitor centre.

Hiking tip: The 2nd stage of the rafting trail leads from Hottwil to Villigen in 2h 45min. A visit to the visitor centre rounds off the hiking day. Catering: The OASE restaurant serves lunch and dinner directly on the PSI site.
