Parish church of St. Johannes Hergiswil
Description
With its dimensions (54 meters long and 23 meters wide), the parish church dwarfs many other country churches in the canton of Lucerne. The building still follows the Singer-Purtschert style, which is very widespread in Central Switzerland, but the design here is classicist and has been transformed into something more functional and straightforward.
The church dominates the village with its pointed tower. The interior has a monumental expanse and is decorated with rich stucco work and fresh ceiling frescoes by Anton Bütler. The wonderful stucco marble work on the altars and the pulpit, as well as the altarpieces by Johann Bucher and the baroque figures emphasize the festive character of the church interior.
