Monastery church

Description

The east-facing monastery church, where the monks gather for worship several times a day, forms the central wing of the monastery complex.

As the Romanesque and then Gothic monastery buildings had suffered over the centuries and no longer met the spatial requirements, work began in 1704 on the construction of today's baroque monastery complex. The other wings serve as living and working spaces for the monastic community and monastery school, guests and internal services such as the kitchen.

The stucco interior of the church and the paintings on the ceilings and walls of the nave were created by the Munich artists, the Asam brothers. The large dome depicts Christmas. The wrought-iron choir screen with three perspective gates separates the choir from the main room in the manner of a rood screen.

The monastery church is open daily from 5 am to 8.30 pm. Take a look behind the facades and learn about the thousand-year history of the monastery. Einsiedeln Tourism offers daily guided tours of the monastery
