Kirchlibuck

Description

Sensational find in a place steeped in history.

In the 5th century, Christians built a church in the bridge fort on the Kirchlibuck, which had been abandoned by the Romans. Around the same time, a second church was built in the Roman burial ground on the road to Vindonissa (Windisch), where the grave of St Verena was discovered. Urzacha, the later market town of Bad Zurzach, eventually developed around this church, while the settlement in the fort was gradually abandoned. The foundation walls of the church on the Kirchlibuck, a baptismal font and parts of an outbuilding can still be seen. In this area, shepherds found a vessel that was thought to be the jug of Verena, according to the Zurzach Miracle Book (collection of miracle reports) from the beginning of the 11th century. The castle chapel was built to commemorate the discovery of the jug, which is one of the attributes of the saint.

Opening Hours

The Kirchlibuck is open all year round, but the castle chapel is closed.
