Jungfrau Railway
Description
The impressive journey with the Jungfrau Railway to the world-famous Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe is an experience. In two hours, the train takes you from Interlaken Ost to Europe's highest railway station at 3454 m above sea level. On the way, you will experience a spectacular stopover at the Eismeer station.
Your adventure journey with the Jungfrau Railway starts at Kleine Scheidegg. The journey from Interlaken Ost to this starting point takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. From there, the Jungfrau Railway takes you up to the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe - in just 35 minutes. During the ride, 1400 metres in altitude are covered. The route is nine kilometres long, seven of which are in a tunnel through the Eiger and Mönch mountains. On the way, the rack railway makes a stop at the Eismeer intermediate station. Here you can leave the train for five minutes and marvel at the impressive mountain landscape through a viewing window.
The Jungfrau Railway is considered a pioneering work among mountain railways. In 1896, the first sod was turned for the construction of the railway. In the initial phase, construction work progressed only with difficulty. Piece by piece, the miners worked their way through the rock of the mountain massif and created one more station each year from 1899 onwards. Finally, in 1912, the Jungfraujoch terminus was opened at 3454 metres above sea level. Despite all its successes, the history of the construction of the Jungfrau Railway is also marked by blasting accidents, strikes and financial problems. On the "Alpine Sensation" tour, a picture gallery shows you the most important stages of the project.
The Jungfrau Railway is in operation all year round. A day trip to the world-famous Jungfraujoch is a first-class experience. You dive into another world and enjoy the interplay of panorama, ice, rocks and snow.
