Hüswil Reformed Church
Description
The jewel of the church is the magnificent choir window "Jesus and the family" (1943) designed by peasant painter Walter Soom from Heimiswil. The wood-accented, simple and warm worship space is framed by the stained glass windows of the benefactors (Schmid, Düby, Hügli, Hofer families, Huttwil parish). The building is kept in a very simple Heimatstil style and blends in perfectly with the landscape. Just above the church is the cemetery, the only purely reformed cemetery in the canton of Lucerne until 2011. The simple exterior with its white plastered tower. Various rooms are located in the basement. The church is an impressive testimony to the energy and creativity of the small reformed diaspora community in the Lucerne hinterland.
Viewpoint
The church stands on a hill above the former cheese dairy. The church square offers a delightful view over the picturesque hilly landscape of the Napf region. A bench and a fountain on the forecourt invite you to linger. The little church is just a short detour away from the Way of St. James and the Herzroute. Here you will find a moment of contemplation and reflection.
Festival venue
The Protestant Reformed parish of Willisau-Hüswil had the church in Hüswil built in 1939/40. Church services are held here regularly. The church and its atmospheric surroundings are very popular with wedding couples and christening families. The wood-accented, simple and warm worship room is adorned by the patrons' stained glass windows.
A place of contemplation
The magnificent choir window "Jesus and the family" (1943) by peasant painter Walter Soom from Heimiswil is considered the jewel of the church. The blessing Jesus is the center of the church. He invites you to pray and reflect. The banner with the request "Make us strong in faith!" can be an inspiration. Every day at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. the prayer bells ring. Sunday is also rung on Saturday at 7 pm.
Historical
Hüswil is a large hamlet in the municipality of Zell, directly on the Bernese cantonal border. Johann Düby was the initiator of the construction of the reformed church in Hüswil. Reformed services were held in the "Dübyhaus" even before the church was built. Johann Düby also donated the building site for the church, just above the main road towards Huttwil. The parish assembly of the Reformed parish of Willisau approved the building project on March 26, 1939. The foundation stone of the church, designed by architect Albert Fiechter from Willisau, was laid on July 30, 1939. The bells were cast on December 13, 1939 and hoisted on April 20, 1940. The solemn consecration of the church took place on September 29, 1940. The colored choir window was installed in 1943 and the organ in 1963.
