Chapel of St. Joder

Description

The original chapel, with furnishings from the 18th century, was demolished in 1987. The new building was erected in 1990. Numerous parishioners supported the experts as assistants.

The pictures and stained glass windows in the interior were created by the Benedictine priest Karl Stadler from Engelberg. A large fresco depicts the legend of St. Theodul fighting the devil. Stadler also created the stained glass windows with the saints Verena, Ottilia (these two were already depicted in the previous chapel) and Hubertus. The cross with a corpus from the 16th century is impressive.

St. Joder was a hermitage until the 19th century. The last hermit was Brother Michael Achermann, who was known as a modeler. The hermit's hut was demolished around the middle of the 20th century; a school building for the municipality of Hergiswil was built on the site in 1957. The school has since been abandoned and the house is now privately owned.
